Richard marries Elizabeth Clifford in 1908. The 1911 census shows Richard working as a Hewer at the Face and living at 38 Quaking Houses, South Moor with his In-laws, wife and two sons Thomas William and Richard. They later have two daughters Annie and Martha.

Husband of Lenora Marshal Moore Gowland, 8 Mitchell St, South Moor.Enlisted 2 December 1914 as Private 1505 1st Northern General Hospital, Royal Army Medical Corps. Discharged 11 June 1915 for the purpose of re-enlistment. Enlisted 12 June 1915, PS/7887, 19th Service Bn, Royal Fusiliers. Promoted three times from Aug 1915 to June 1916. Transferred 13 Sept 1916 to Sergeant G/18241, 11th Bn Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). Died of wounds in the field 11 Oct 1916. Buried Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’abbe, Somme, France. Some service records found. 8 Mitchell Street appears throughout his service records although his wife does later move around 1919. (South Moor Park Memorial)

Killed in action 26 April 1915, 18 years, no body recovered. Named on Ypres Memorial, Belgium. (South Moor Park Memorial). Living with his mother in 1911 census and probably until his death in 1915; mother dies 1917 so CWGC has his brother Joseph Ball’s address listed. Brother Robert also died in service (below)

Private 28664, 15th Bn Durham Light Infantry. Died of wounds 3 July 1916. Buried Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbe, Somme, France. (South Moor Park Memorial). Only record of address is in 1911 with his mother at this address. He marries in 1915 and has a son in the same year so may have been living at a different address. Brother Henry also died in service (above)
