Son of the late Hannah Maria Simm of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.Enlisted 12 October 1915, Stanley. Private 27868, Durham Light Infantry. Died 4 August 1916 from a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head. Buried Amplier Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Soldiers who committed suicide whilst in service qualified for CWGC commemoration and war grave status. William’s service records and medal roll card both list two medals but there is no evidence that these were actually distributed or received by his next of kin. Brother James William Duffy from 30 Poulton Tce, Oxhill also killed in service. (St George’s Church Memorial). Michael is listed in 1911 as living at this address but marries Ellen Grant soon after the census was taken and later had one daughter. I have no other information but would think they would possibly have moved on to their own home elsewhere.

Thomas’s total service was 7 years & 25 days, he left for the front on 19 April 1915 and was presumed dead 8 days later. All records are addressed to the late wife Matilda at this address until she dies 22 June 1918 and then all other correspondence is sent to Thomas’s daughter, Mabel Agnes at 8 Mitchell Street, South Moor.
